IRI - Initiative and Referendum Institute Europe

This year sees the twentieth birthday of the “Rostock Process” - and also

the tenth anniversary of the founding of the Initiative and Referendum Institute

Europe: Europe’s global think-tank on direct democracy. We would like to invite

you to join us for a weekend of reflection on Europe - on what has been

achieved and what is still lacking, the successes and the failures, the prospects

and the hopes for democracy in Europe ... and more. Be with us when we look

back together and examine what really became of the “We are the people” and

how we can - step by step - democratise democracy in the next twenty years.

Welcome to a weekend full of insights, fascinating stories and challenging

perspectives in the new cultural centre of the Hansa City of Rostock, the Peter

Weiss House.

Friday, 2nd September 2011, 18.00, in the garden of the Peter Weiss House (if
the weather’s good) with a public discussion on 20 years of democratisation in
Rostock, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany, Europe and the world.
On Saturday there will be a big roundtable discussion of democracy activists,
with inputs on the most exciting developments of recent years and suggestions
for what we should be focusing on in the next twenty years to 2030. The
conference will close on Saturday evening with a big party.
